Posses

As of Althing 2009, Posses are now new and improved: a) Events, Fundraising and Assets b) Campaigns and Projects c) Communications and Affiliations.

Posses are a great way to get involved in the running of DFs. You can choose the area which interests you most and then get involved at the level that you want. You don't have to be elected, just get in touch.

How do posses work?

Each posse has a Chair, which is now not on committee, and elected by the posse. He or she will let you know what opportunities are available. You can tell the Chair if there is something else that you think the posse should be doing. You can give as little or as much commitment you would like, and then get going!

What posses are there?

The Events, Fundraising and Assets Posse

If you want to be involved in the organising of events or helping with what goes on during the event itself, then this is the posse for you. It is also about applying for grants, organising fundraising events, and looking after and getting the most out of our assets.

Events

Events is making sure that DF Events continue to be awesome. This can mean being an Event Coordinator (being part of a team that runs an event), booking venues, organising programs, coming up with ideas for new events, etc. Contact the Events Rep at events@spanthatworld.com to get in on the action or www.spanthatworld.com/events for more information.

Fundraising

There are lots of ways to raise money for DFs. One method is to hold massive gigs like spanthatworldwithmusic (see events). Another is to sell t-shirts, posters, CDs etc. If you would like to join in with this, or have some new ideas, contact fundraiser@spanthatworld.com.

Assets

Assets are everything that the DF Movement owns. We've got stuff in the DF Stores that is available for use at events. We are looking into starting a new DF Centre. We've also got things like the Coop Discount Card, and soon we will have our account back!

Communications and Affiliations Posse

This posse is for people who like talking to people and enjoy publicising. You can make designs for the website, leaflets or whatever you like, and help to disseminate information within and beyond the Movement. You can also build links with likeminded organisations, which includes inviting them to our events and advertising theirs.

Communications

Communications is about making sure that information is spread across the movement so that our members can get the most out of it. It also means spreading the word about DFs, or raising our profile. And it means enthusing members to get involved, encouraging broader participation. Go to www.spanthatworld.com/what-we-do/campaigns for more information or contact the communications rep at communications@spanthatworld.com to participate.

Affiliations

Affiliations means getting in touch with new likeminded organisations and building relationships with old friends. Current affiliates include the Co-Op, Trade Unions, The NYA, The NDCS, the International Falcon Movement, The Centre for Alternative technology and others. Visit www.spanthatworld.com/resources/affiliations for more information or contact affiliations@spanthatworld.com for a slice of the affiliations cake.

Campaigns and Projects

These form the main basis of the programme at DF Events and the DF contribution to Woodcraft Folk Events. In some ways the can be said to be the spirit of the Movement. Being involved in them can be a way to help, educate and inspire people, and can have a great effect on society.

Campaigns

Campaigns is when DFs go to the front line. But we don't do this without preparation. We start of with education; action must come out of knowledge. It works like this: a few dedicated individuals do their research. Then they share it with the Movement in the form of workshops and talks. We also get in guest speakers and resources. Then we discuss what to do about it and take direct action. The current two Campaigns are No Nuclear Future and Stop the Traffik, which address two of the most daunting challenges of our times.

Projects

DFs currently have three permanent Projects. They largely involve workshops on National and International Woodcraft Folk Events, but there are plans to take them into schools and other places. There is also a lot of potential funding in this area, so there are many possibilities. The projects are MEST-UP, which is about mediation and peer education, PARTY, which is about politics, current affairs and peer education, and Rainbow, which is acts against racism and sexism. Visit www.spanthatworld.com/what-we-do/projects for more details or e-mail the Projects Rep at projects@spanthatworld.com to get involved.

There's a lot of potential to join in, meet people, have some experiences and get that warm bubbly feeling of doing good things. All the posses do essential work, without overloading any individual members. Together we can make real changes for the better.
