Spring Awakening: A Retrospect

Spring Awakening was awesome! Although Sophie was struggling with a horrid cold, together with Susie, they both did a stupendous job of organising and running camp. Their powerful voices carried across the field of tents, awakening us to a sunny day of merriment and DF love.

The camp’s theme nights were the elements, fire, earth, air and water, but without doubt fire took the lead. As usual containing many topless men, dangerously swirling fire through the air. The ‘back to basics’ camp certainly lived up to it’s name. Toasting marshmallows by the campfire, singing till the very early morning, story telling and of course, mud. There was so much of the stuff with worms everywhere, even crawling on my wellies!

Spectacular workshops ran through the days, ranging from ‘The Big Ideas Pot’ to ‘Refugees and Asylum Seekers’. I wish I could have gone to them all, however the sun makes you lazy, and suddenly cloud watching came on to the agenda. “Hmm… is that a chicken leg?” (must be nearly lunch). All the food was incredible thanks to the excellent KP, Will. It was camp food heaven, with eggy bread for breakfast everyday.

The wide game was hilarious, full of strange co-operative games including an interesting game of Kabadi. Friendship bracelets and circus tricks features too over the days, along with a very muddy game of ratchet screwdriver. I still remember the pain… and the FUN! Secret friends was also going on, I think kites became a popular present. Whoever had my name should feel ashamed. I’ve never had a secret friend present on a DF event… yet!

I loved the relaxed, musical atmosphere. I still don’t know who was playing the cornet or the harmonica…? Guitars at every turn and beautiful singing voices flowing across the site. ! One afternoon involved me getting covered in blood! No, it wasn’t the angry residents of Lurgashall- A training session was run for Dfs to learn 1st aid, so I volunteered to pretend to be an injured person, there was a lot of fake blood. Oh, the screaming was fun.

The evening drew on and the weary Dfs moved to the fire for a political discussion workshop. Wow, I’ve never seen a workshop round the fire, wonderful… There was one thing that didn’t fit the category of ‘back to basics’, the awesome cinema! With an actual cinema projector, Solomon made sure brilliant films were shown every night. You can never get bored on a DF camp.

Phin created a really funny video, I love the bit with Sophie on the Go-Kart! If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s a must. You will laugh, I promise.

So, all in all an amazing camp! Thank you so much to the lovely Susie and Sophie, it couldn’t of happened without them.

    I second this.
And wish to add that it’s amazing how short this is whilst capturing so much of what went on.
