Right to Refuge – A small act

Hello! Will Searby, your Campaigns Rep here.

So why have I called you here To-day?

Well, you might have noticed, a couple of months ago, that our glorious leader Rt. Hon. Davros Cameron announcing that as good patriotic subjects of Big-Societyland it was our national duty to report potential migrants to the Home Office. If not here’s a re-run:

Cameron launches Immigration Crackdown

You might notice that there’s not really much definition of when you should suspect an immigrant and apparently we’re not going to be provided with the UK border agency training to spot shifty looking foreigners. I suppose we’ve got to trust our gut instinct.

It’s slightly obvious that there’s something wrong with this.

Firstly, government ministries such as the Home Office should probably not be relying on the random suspicions of the admittedly tempermental British public for conducting what is, whatever your viewpoint on immigration, pretty hefty and important work.

But secondly, and more importantly, it’s clear that this is completely at odds with an ethos of inclusion and integration for ethnic minorities. Urging people to turn their neighbours in to be deported doesn’t build happy communities.

Granted, the majority of cases aren’t followed up (which surely makes the whole system a bit pointless anyway) but the message that the Prime Minister is giving is definitely not one of integration and understanding.

But we, as good people, are always here to help.

It’s a divisive system, but we can do our bit to thwart it’s evil intent, with a bit of persistence, and a great deal of hilarity and mirth (cause that’s how we roll!), we can jam the server for the public submission of suspicious individuals.

This is where our ‘report your MP’ action comes in.

The aim is to report anyone of significance in popular society (the more prestigious the better) to wage a war of irony (we’re that edgy) on the less pleasant end of the government immigration policy.

Possible reasons for suspicion? seen them eating noodles? perhaps they used a phrase favoured by our French cousins, or maybe they just don’t know the rules of cricket. Be inventive.

In the words of Mr Cameron:

I want everyone in the country to help … including by reporting suspected illegal immigrants to our Border Agency through the Crimestoppers phoneline or through the Border Agency website.

Which you can access here.
