GUERILLA CINEMA

Published on 14th March 2010 by Josh Dodd

Edinburgh Woodcraft Folk has teamed up with Alchemy Arts project to create a sustainable-bike-driven-mobile-cinema!

This is a brand new project that has only just started and is gaining momentum as we speak. Cinema screen, projector, seating and ice-cream will all be transported on three bikes, powered by pedal, solar and wind power to be set up in open locations across the city for free film screenings.

From start to finish young people have and are getting involved. From making the bikes from scratch to deciding what films to show and decorating the outside area with lanterns and creative designs, they need your help to make it as special as possible. The cinema is planned to visit some of the more deprived areas of Edinburgh to give young people a chance to organise their own events, exhibit their own films all in the comfort of own communities.

For the District Fellows this has been brilliant! It’s given us something to focus and has definitely kept us busy and on our toes. We’ve ordered solar panels from Germany, built a three bikes from a flat pack and been busy working on the design and identity. Its not been easy and its definitely not finished, we have less than three weeks to finish construction and promotion and then we’re free to hit the road!

If you can make it up to Edinburgh it’d be awesome if you could come up for the launch event;

Friday 19th March
‘Launch of Guerilla Cinema – Phonica and Philm’
7pm – 11pm

Be the first to experience the finished product. If you don’t want to get involved with making it, come see it for free! Meet at Innocent Railway Tunnel (near Pollock) to cycle with friends and community to the Craigmiller venue where we will show a few locally made films and a feature length film. Organised by the local children who use the art centre and various woodcraft groups expect popcorn and drink, fire sculptures and lanterns, live music and a local photography exhibition.

Span That World With Friendship

The District Fellows Movement is the 16-20 year old members of the co-operative educational youth charity, the woodcraft folk, whose ideology is based on the principles of equality, peace, social justice and co-operation, with an emphasis on the empowerment of young people.

DF meetings usually consist of a group of like minded individuals meeting up at a regular time and place (someone's house, or a pub for instance, or even a community hall if the group is large enough) and taking part in usual woodcraft activities. These activities range from co-operative games, orgainising events, workshops and discussions, and general socialising!

The DF movement also meets up on a national basis frequently, to hold both social, educational events and business events allowing everyone to be involved in the running of DF's...
