GET ON THE WAVE

Nov 23, 2009 by     3 Comments    Posted under: Span That World

On Saturday 5 December 2009, ahead of the crucial UN climate summit in Copenhagen, tens of thousands of people from all walks of life will flow through the streets of London (and Glasgow) to demonstrate their support for a safe climate future for all. It comes as part of a global series of public actions, The Wave will call on world leaders to take urgent action to secure a fair international deal to stop global warming exceeding the danger threshold of 2 degrees Celsius.

The Wave is organised by the Stop Climate Chaos Coalition but hopes to have many people from all walks of life to show mass support for a better, low carbon future for the UK and the world.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Feeder events: 10am – 1pm, and there are even some events starting on the evening of 4th December! Check the website http://www.stopclimatechaos.org/the-wave for more info.

Assemble:
12pm, Grosvenor Square
Climax: 3pm Encircling of Parliament

After Party: 4.30pm, LSE, more details to come

Dress code: Blue!

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING

Blue! The Wave is a display of unity and belief by people from all walks of life. We are asking everyone to wear something blue as a visible display of this unity. If you can, please paint your hands blue (or wear blue gloves) ready to wave them in the air at the mass moment at 3pm.

Please also bring any placards, banners, flags etc that you can. If you’re making some especially for the occasion, and are wondering what to write on them, then don’t forget that we’re calling on the Government to Act Fair and Fast, Protect the Poorest, and Quit Dirty Coal (follow the links to find out precisely what each involves). Of course this is your day – so put any messages you want on your materials to show the Government you want a better, low carbon future for the UK and the world.

Plus, if you are a musician, stilt-walker, member of a dance troupe etc then please do come ready to play, dance or balance your way along the route of The Wave! The more music and visual impact we can bring to the day the better.
And by the way, don’t forget that London in December can be cold and wet. Make sure you wrap up warm and bring waterproofs and/or an umbrella just in case!

WHAT YOU CAN DO NOW

They’re looking for Stewards (I’m helping at the lesser known but just as exciting Glasgow Wave) which is a brilliant opportunity to find out how these large scale marches work and feel part of something even bigger than the massive thing itself!

Make a Mexican Wave – a short video of you by yourself doing a part of a mexican wave that can be uploaded online and they’re going to piece all of them together

Promote the Wave in your area, get people excited, put up posters and finally bring people to the wave itself!

And if you have loads of time you could even CYCLE there to show your commitment to the cause because Climate Chains (http://climatechains.blogspot.com/) are organising Wheels to the Wave through:

Bradford to Sheffield – 30th Nov
Sheffield to Nottingham – 1st Dec
Nottingham to Peterborough – 2nd Dec
Peterborough to Cambridge – 3rd Dec
Cambridge to Walthamstow – 4th Dec
Walthamstow to Central London – 5th Dec

There should be a big Woodcraft Folk presence on the March and arrangements for where  DFs are meeting beforehand will be available soon!
