DFs Launches The Woodie Affinity Group

Jul 31, 2010 by     No Comments    Posted under: Span That World

Hello Woodies! As a group of keen campaigners and activists you’ll all be fantastically pleased to hear about the launch of the brand new WOODCRAFT AFFINITY GROUP!  Yes, that’s right, we’re going to do it. For those of you wondering what an affinity group is and why Woodcraft Folk now has one; it is a group of likeminded individuals who are working together for direct action, making designs in a co-operative and sensitive manner to other members of the group. You may now  be thinking “but isn’t this what The Woodcraft Folk do anyway?”, however the affinity group is being formed with more “specific” direct action in mind. The ultimate goal of the affinity group is to be able to go protests and demonstrations as a group of Woodcraft Folk members with a clear idea of why we’re going and our purpose there. No more are the days of thinking, “Do I  go to the Climate Wave?”, “Will I know anyone there?”, “What will I be doing when I get there?” Now you’ll know what’s going down, when, where and with who! This group will hopefully give the Woodcraft Folk the chance to make an impact and consequently a noticeable difference. It will also give us the power to make decisions quickly and co-operatively in the thick of a protest, as a group who trust and know each other, decreasing the pressure on the less-hardcore activists and making everything run a lot smoother.

Climate Camp 2010

How does it tie in with Climate Camp? The idea of a Woodie Affinity group started when talks of going to the upcoming Climate Camp 2010 began that DF Camp, however it is all organised via affinity groups, so if there isn’t one near you, or you’ve left it too late ect it is very hard to get involved in any group organising & planning.

So the solution to this? Begin our very own Affinity Group drawing from the skills and awesome-ness of the District Fellows Movement launching in time for Climate Camp 2010!  Then we thought, “well if we’re go to go to all this effort, why not continue it on beyond 2010?” Making an even stronger and better organised affinity group for next Climate Camp and other events including our own campaigns! Brilliant. So this Climate Camp is going to be where it begins AND WE NEED YOU! We need as many wonderful Woodcraft members to get active and join us! Bringing with you your ideas and well nurtured opinions so that we can start off the affinity group with a massive BANG as the camp  will give us a very good platform to start this thing rolling!

So the details: The camp itself is in the wonderful city of Edinburgh this year, at a location still to be announced, from the 21st-24th of August. (With setting up the 19th-20th and taking down the 25th). The camp is targeting the largely public owned Royal Bank of Scotland “The oil and gas bank” as the main “Climate Criminal” so do your research! Come up with exciting and noticeable ways of protesting! The four days have workshops running and on the 23rd there is a day of action against RBS, so it looks to be an exciting week, and your presence will make it even more exciting! There is a small cost for meals if you are eating them at the camp but I only spent £8 last year, so it is not going to break your bank!

So come people, and come in your masses, let  us start something awesome!
